I grew up going to camp in the Laurel Highlands when I was a child, so when I was contacted about doing a Laurel Highlands Live Wedding Painting, I was 100% up for it. There’s just something about the Laurel Highland mountains that adds such a picturesque calm to a wedding.
Laurel Highlands Live Wedding Painting
The ceremony was at the top of a narrow gravel road. I got there about 2 and a half hours early to set up my easel and take a few reference photos. I don’t like to be in the way during a wedding, so I set up my easel about 20 feet behind the ceremony chairs. I was the only person up there for a while, and it was so peaceful to just stand and paint the scenery.
Soon, more of the vendors got to the ceremony site, and the guests started to trickle in. Guest interactions with the painting are always fun. Kids always seem the most interested- they want to help! A sweet little boy came up to my easel several times to make sure that I had gotten the cell phone tower that was far in the distance, haha.
I try my best to get the background finished before heading to the reception- that way, I have the rest of the evening to focus on the most important part of the painting….the couple! (Oh, and in the case, their precious little pup that they wanted added in too.) After the ceremony is over, I get a couple up-close photos of the wedding couple for reference, and head to the reception!
I always give couples the choice of whether they’d like a formal reveal at the end of the evening, or if they’d prefer to watch the painting come to life throughout the night. About 90% of the artwork is completed live at the wedding, with the final refinements finished in the studio afterward – transforming the painting from its live foundation into a fully polished masterpiece.
